Puppy Pre-School

Thank you for inquiring about our Puppy Pre-School at North Perth Veterinary Clinic. It is wonderful news that you are starting your puppy off on the right paws!

Puppy Pre-School is a great way to learn how important the socialisation period for puppies really is and how you can progress with this at home to ensure you build solid foundations for a sound and confident dog later in life.

Our course is held on a Wednesday evening for a period of four weeks.

Our Socialisation program is based on real life experiences and should be viewed as an opportunity to learn how to expose your puppy correctly to ‘daily life’ in order to prepare him/her for adult life. We spend some of our time at the Vet Clinic but we also have two exciting excursions. We chose areas that will offer a variety of experiences in as a controlled environment as practicable.

Classes at the surgery are structured to follow on from training elements between sessions, therefore, it is important that exercises are practised at home or you and your puppy will fall behind. (Any missed classes can be made up by viewing the membership area on the website)

These classes are not a ‘free for all’ play session as this can actually damage the development of social skills which is what we are trying to avoid during this sensitive period of development.

As you will be aware, all puppies are individuals and some will cope better in a class environment than others. For this reason, on the rare occasion a puppy may not be suitable to train under these conditions and you will therefore be offered an alternative solution to your training.

All our training is based on up to date scientific research and has been tried and tested over many years. We train using Operant Conditioning utilising the power of positive reinforcement or the removal of a reinforcer (reward).

We do not advocate or support any form of punishment as this will damage your relationship with your puppy and is often the cause of fear based behaviours including aggression.
